Discover a UNESCO Biosphere in the Heart of the 30,000 Islands
Parry Sound is proudly located within the UNESCO-designated Georgian Bay Mnidoo Gamii Biosphere — one of only 16 biosphere reserves in Canada. Stretching along 200 kilometres of eastern Georgian Bay shoreline, this extraordinary region extends from Port Severn to the French River and encompasses the world’s largest freshwater archipelago: the iconic 30,000 Islands.
Known for its breathtaking wilderness, natural beauty, and rich cultural history, the Georgian Bay Mnidoo Gamii Biosphere is a place unlike anywhere else. Shaped by more than two billion years of geological history, the landscape features ancient Canadian Shield rock, windswept islands, crystal-clear waters, quiet inlets, and hidden coves waiting to be explored.
This remarkable ecosystem supports an incredible diversity of life, including 170 species of birds, 44 species of mammals, and 34 species of reptiles and amphibians. The region is also recognized for having the richest diversity of reptiles and amphibians in Canada, including the protected Massasauga rattlesnake.
